Vision Pro and Disney+ Collaboration

New year, new tech. Disney and Apple are set to change the game regarding entertainment.

The release of the Vision Pro has sparked widespread awe, captivating people worldwide with its impressive array of features and capabilities: twin 4K displays, eye tracking, hand-gesture input, and the immersive 3D VisionOS environment, this cutting-edge headset represents a pinnacle in technological innovation. Yet, Apple wasn't the sole player in this groundbreaking venture. When Apple first unveiled the Vision Pro, Disney emerged as a launch partner, promising an app ready for the device's debut. From day one, Disney+ has been on the Vision Pro. One popular feature of the app allows you to immerse yourself in four virtual environments:

  • Hollywood's iconic Disney-owned El Capitan theater

  • Monsters Inc’s Scare Floor

  • Avengers’ Manhattan headquarters

  • Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder

Each setting surrounds you in 360 degrees of obsessively rendered detail, elevating the viewing experience to unprecedented levels of immersion. There’s also a mixed-reality storyline from Disney in development, hinting at the boundless possibilities.

The collaboration between Vision Pro and Disney represents a potential shift in content consumption, as VR takes center stage. As highlighted by LaBerge in a recent article, this release is set to "change our entire production and post-production pipeline. It’s going to change how we make content, how we operate our environments. It’s a big deal.” However, will Apple be able to make the Vision Pro a mass-consumer product? Only time will reveal whether Disney's bold move into this realm will thrive or fall apart. Nevertheless, should Apple succeed in making the Vision Pro a household staple, the potential for animation studios, not only for Disney but countless others, is immense and the world of animation will be forever changed.

Happy drawing,
